A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
