An Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange accommodation after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I caught public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in a place operating all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals like that woman.

It seems I seemed confused since a woman saw me wandering around the city center and asked whether I needed help. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one stuffed baguettes she had from her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her good deed tenfold. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
