British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
