Condemnation Explodes as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the political divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
