The direst projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been mapped by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre increase in ocean levels. Another scenario foresees a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy demand.

Credible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These consequences, certain ones are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as improbable but possible. The team said that these projections addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," stated Nigel Arnell who led the analysis. "The nation has been planning without the tools to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Scenarios

A further series of severe models sets out the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events coming to pass remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This approach was likened to national security risk assessments or stress tests for financial systems.

Key Possibility Elements

• Severe Heating: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action collapses or if vicious cycles including the tropical forests dying unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
• Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the AMOC, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Farming would be severely challenged and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted the professor.
• Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic melt abruptly, flooding seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by coastal engineers.
• Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from fossil fuel combustion scatter sunlight from warming the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Extreme

The severe models could be utilized in planning the development of long-term infrastructure, including housing developments, power generation facilities and flood defences. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also hasten the transition to slash fossil fuel emissions.

The research developed the worst-case scenarios using a mix of observed and historical experience, climate models and established principles. These outcomes do not take into account broader worldwide issues such as the global food shortages and resource wars.

The project was requested as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

Official experts has recommended that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and examine the threats for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by environmental groups.
