Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
