New Year Revelers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Proceed Despite Alerts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.
Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be cold, making warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.
- Travel is anticipated to be disrupted.
- The public have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.
Temperatures Set to Fall Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this meant the weather was likely to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is completely key.
