New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
