Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Announced

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration withheld any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting the president had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a truce plan supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of comprehensive conditions that involve the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the sole subject that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday preceded reports that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
