The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
