The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
