The Reason PSG Are Focusing On Local Players to Defend Their Continental Crown

Locally developed players were previously a relatively rare sight on PSG team sheets.

Until a few years ago, the club's Qatari ownership was spearheaded by big-money signings from abroad.

The Change in Strategy

Some of PSG's most notable youth graduates during that period, such as Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, departed the club before establishing themselves in the first team.

The club's turn towards French talent in the past few years has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue spearhead last year's successful campaign.

Developing Homegrown Talent

Now, PSG are planning to build further and build around their local prospects, a shift that has been accelerated by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the unavailable stars, there have been as many as five academy graduates - each hailing from the local region - in the team sheet this season.

State-of-the-Art Academy Complex

The club's extensive football campus has been key to that strategy.

Previously, PSG moved out of the old training ground to the adjacent state-of-the-art PSG Campus.

The recently opened complex, which were publicly launched a recently, host the senior squads along with their academy teams over a large area.

These include 16 pitches, accommodation for youth prospects, educational facilities and even a vegetable garden.

Long-term Planning

During an event to celebrate the five-decade history of the youth system's establishment, sporting advisor Luis Campos explained that the organization's vision were to integrate "more and more players from the Paris area" in the first team.

"The philosophy is to have talents in all youth categories who can climb the steps the academy," states Campos.

A clearer path from the development program to the first team can also reduce the team's dependence on the transfer market, the technical director pointed out.

For Campos, "frequent shopping regularly doesn't make you a more skilled culinary artist."

"What's important is to be progressing in the correct path, not to accumulate talents," he adds.

Youth Development

The ex-Ligue 1 executive also recounted a session between Luis Enrique and the academy staff, in which the Spanish manager outlined his "football philosophy" rather than imposing specific exercises or playing systems to follow.

The Asturian's hiring two seasons ago, Campos notes, was notably favoured by "willingness to play youth prospects as soon as they're ready."

Rising Stars

Facing Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who spearheaded the attack and scored in PSG's unlikely 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also participated in the victory over the Spanish side, while teenage Mathis Jangeal was among the substitutes, having broken into the senior setup a few days beforehand.

Mayulu, who netted the fifth and final goal in the Champions League final victory over Inter in May, has been one of the early success stories of the revised strategy.

Multi-position Player

The emerging engine room operator, primarily a midfield player, notably owes his half-century of senior appearances to his adaptability.

After beginning in each Ligue 1 fixture since the late summer, Mayulu has been deployed throughout the team, from right-back, to central midfield, to striker position.

Youth Development Direction

Yohan Cabaye has been the overseer of the youth system since 2024, having originally joined the development system soon after the completion of his football journey.

The ex-international player speaks particularly highly of Mayulu, emphasizing the way he returned strongly from injury multiple occasions in his formative years.

"During his early days in the youth system, he was unable to get through complete years," Cabaye explains. "He had such resilience that he consistently returned, though."

Unique Player

Zaire-Emery, as the experienced midfielder describes him, is an unique situation.

"We can't use him as an benchmark, if we did you'd have numerous teenagers seeking out Luis Enrique's attention," he says.

Presently experiencing his fourth campaign in the main roster, the young talent has been skippering the depleted Parisians from an increasingly familiar right-back role.

Resurgent Performance

Subsequent to challenges through periods during last season, the Les Bleus representative is rediscovering the explosive form that first saw him break into the first team.

After also coming back to the French senior side earlier this month, the local product explained his period with the development squad contributed to restoring his confidence.

"I've focused on myself, I continued working and maintained dedication," he explained before the game with Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have reaped the rewards, with Zaire-Emery serving as the standard-bearer another time for the latest academy products of Parisians.

Rival Interest

A crucial aspect of optimizing the Parisian talent pool is combating approaches by other clubs.

With a team of full-time scouts observing development leagues in the metropolitan area, PSG are aiming to enhance their presence on the fertile ground for players at their doorstep, from which their French and continental competitors have traditionally acquired players.

Academy Achievements

When development league outcomes are any indication, PSG will not be short of talents to advance in the coming campaigns.

The under-19 side retained their league title this recent campaign and have impressed on the international tournaments, which has inevitably attracted external interest.

"There are frequently between 30 and 40 scouts from French and foreign teams visiting our development fixtures," Cabaye notes.</
